HIV is a chronic medical condition and like other chronic diseases there is treatment for it, and it can be controlled. All you need to do to control your HIV, is to take your treatment and you can live a long and healthy life. If you take the correct dose of ARVs every day at the correct time, you can achieve viral load suppression.  

When you are virally suppressed, the amount of HIV in your body is Undetectable. When the virus is Undetectable, HIV will be Untransmittable.Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U)

Visit the clinic for a viral load test 6 months after starting ARVs.

Step 4. Achieve U=U

At your next clinic visit, ask your HCP if you are virally suppressed and have achieved U=U. Congratulations you can look forward to being healthy, strong and can’t pass it on.

Keep taking your ARVs every day. Visit the clinic every 12 months for a viral load test to ensure that you are virally suppressed.

Taking ARV treatment helps you achieve The New Status.

By taking your ARV treatment, you become virally suppressed. When you are virally suppressed, you will be undetectable. When you are undetectable, your HIV will be untransmissable. You will have achieved The New Status. This is when you are still HIV positive, but you cannot pass your HIV on to others.
